Prius News: Prius to be assembled in U.S.; Japan Prius plant wins gold quality
award
• In response to high U.S. customer demand, North American production of
Prius is scheduled to begin in late 2010 at a
plant currently under construction in Blue Springs, Mississippi. Prius will
be the second Toyota hybrid assembled in
North America, in addition to Camry Hybrid, which is assembled in Toyota's Erlanger,
Kentucky plant.
• The Prius plant in Fujimatsu, Japan, has won the Gold Award for Asian
automotive manufacturers in the 2008 J.D. Power
and Associates Initial Quality Study for quality manufacture. The awards are
granted based on the lowest number of
defects per 100 vehicles. Toyota production facilities in North America and
Asia totaled more Initial Quality Study
awards than any manufacturer worldwide.
Toyota tops J.D. Power's Environmental Index and "What to Drive"
green list
Toyota and Lexus have a total of seven cars and SUVs—the most of any automaker—of
the thirty vehicles on J.D. Power
and Associates' 2008 Automotive Environmental Index (AIE). They are Prius, Camry
Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, Matrix,
Corolla, Yaris, and Lexus RX 400h. The AEI combines U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency information on fuel
economy, air pollution, and greenhouse gases with J.D. Power and Associates'
voice-of-the-customer data related to fuel
economy.
Toyota and Lexus vehicles comprise four of the ten on J.D. Power's "What
to Drive: MPG and the Environment" list. It
features AIE-listed vehicles that also rank high on customer satisfaction, performance,
and design.
Toyota and Pew Center to research and promote energy efficiency
Toyota and The Pew Center on Global Climate Change have launched a research
project to document and communicate
best practices in corporate energy efficiency. The project's goal is to educate
corporations on the most effective methods to
reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, while addressing the market
and internal barriers to implementing energy
efficiency strategies. Toyota's three-year, $1.4 million grant will enable the
development and publication of a report
documenting best practices in energy efficiency, and the execution of a year-long
communications campaign to ensure
wide dissemination of key findings.
Toyota and the environment: afforestation in Indiana; major national park
grant
• In cooperation with the Forestry Division of the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources, Toyota Motor Manufacturing
Indiana has developed a five-year plan to plant 131,000 trees on more than 238
acres of its 1,140-acre campus. The
afforestation project, which began in May 2008, is part of Toyota's Global Vision
2010 and Global Vision 2020,
programs that seek to reduce the environmental impact of automotive vehicle
manufacture and use. The first phase of the
project involved the planting of more than 22,000 seedlings of eleven tree species
on 40 acres, including black walnut,
pecan, red oak, swamp chestnut oak, river birch, and tulip tree.
• Toyota has partnered with Great Smoky Mountains National Park, donating
$1million and three hybrid vehicles to
enhance and develop new science education initiatives for K-12 students, teachers,
and families. The program will
encourage careers in science and support learning opportunities. The grant is
part of Toyota's $5 million contribution in
support of five national parks and the National Park Foundation to enhance environmental
leadership and educational
programs across the country.
